World’s first fully automated baggage system at Copenhagen Airport

Copenhagen Airport has become the first airport in the world to develop a baggage-handling system that takes bags from check-in to placement in the aircraft without manual handling.

 

In close partnership with SAS Ground Services (SGS), Københavns Lufthavne A/S (CPH), FKI Logistex and CPH Design A/S have automated baggage handling. A well-functioning prototype has been patented by CPH and SGS. The ingeniousness of the system is its simplicity – currently available technology has been combined in an innovative manner.

 

By January 1, 2008, there will be 12 baggage lines in operation, all connected to a baggage scanning function that is part of the airport’s central infrastructure. The system will be available to all ground service operators at the airport.

 

The system simplifies the work process, while improving the work environment.

 

“Lifting will be reduced for individual workers. Employee involvement has also been decisive for us. The new system is a result of bringing together leading-edge expertise with SGS contributing practical know-how,” says Steen Neuchs, Director Air- & Landside Operations at SAS Ground Services Denmark.

 

The concept has been developed by design company CPH Design A/S. “We have developed systems for a number of years that improve the work environment and enhance efficiency. It is a great strength that this is taking place in cooperation with daily users, as in this particular case,” says Lars Thøgersen, President of CPH Design A/S.

 

The system also provides benefits with respect to the security regulations with which the airport must comply. The baggage system’s carts create prerequisites for improving security. Since packing takes place based on the bag’s bar code, the location of every bag in the aircraft’s hold is known. If a passenger does not board the aircraft, his or her bags can be found quickly.

 

Bags are packed automatically in the new carts, which empty themselves into the aircraft. In addition, the carts have the advantage that bags do not get wet when it rains or snows.
